Laying down bricks and dropping caps

When Typhoon Ondoy (western name Kitsiana) hit Manila in September of 2009 the city was devastated. However, the tragedy united the people of Manila to help and assist each other at a time of need. Thousands worked together to rebuild the lives of their neighbors who were affected by the devastation of the disaster. The whole world heeded the call for aid in the form of donations, food, clothing and general rehabilitation aid. The sack of rice became a symbol of hope to thousands of Filipinos; it also symbolized the spirit of "bayanihan" (being a hero for others) that was evident during the days after the Typhoon struck. A few months later, the Earthquake that devastated Haiti and destroyed the lives of millions of people prompted the rest of the world to help those in need.

These tragedies have inspired us to create a new line of products called "The Fundraiser" series. We hope to inspire more people to give back to the community in whatever way they can.

For our first fundraiser, we decided to approach Gawad Kalinga. Gawad Kalinga is a foundation that uses a holistic approach to poverty alleviation. The organization teaches the poorest of the poor the values of self-worth and community empowerment through its seven-headed program of Community Building/Values Formation, Health, Shelter, Child and Youth Development, the Environment, and Food Sufficiency. In the process, the poor are taught to become responsible and empowered citizens, driven by love for God, love for others, and love for country. GK started in the Philippines, and is now doing work in Indonesia, Cambodia, and Papua New Guinea. For more information on GK, please visit its website at http://gk1world.com/HomeRedesign

The proceeds of the MNL cap will support Gawad Kalinga's Child and Youth Development Program (CYD). The CYD program aims to develop the skills and talent of the children and youth in GK communities by inculcating in them values that bring out their full potential. Sports, dance, art, tutorials, values formation, and pre-school preparation are the main activities of GK's CYD program that aims to make the youth productive and keep them out of gangs and drugs. Wip Caps, in line with its corporate vision of helping shape a better world, is honored to support the development of such a noteworthy cause.

To kick-off the fundraising, we have organized a volunteer community build at one of the GK villages.

For those in Manila, feel free to join us this Labor day, May 1, 2010 from 10AM - 2PM. The build site is located at GK Tribu, Kalayaan Ave. Batasan Hills, Quezon City(right behind Commission on Audit that is along Commonwealth Ave.)

After some hardwork under the sun, we'll be relocating to Commune(4:30PM~8PM) to relax with some drinks and open-up a 1 day pop-up shop for the MNL 'rice' cap. *From May 2 onward, the MNL caps will only be available through our website. Only 100 caps were made and will retail at Php1,500.

If you have a Face Book account, we would appreciate it if you confirm your attendance at our Face Book event page and help spread the word.http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=115475701807516

Here is a Map to the venue. Since parking might be limited, we've gotten suggestions that it will be better to park at Evergotesco Mall Common Wealth(adjacent or near McDonalds) and carpool to the site.
